When talking with business owners, they find it’s sometimes difficult to get and stay consistent on their most important tasks because life and business just gets in the way.
So I’m going to share with you a little story and a technique, so you can gain and maintain your consistency in doing the successful things that you need to do to achieve your goals.
It starts with Jerry Seinfeld. Everyone knows Jerry Seinfeld, one of the most successful comics ever.
He was going on a TV show and there was a young up-and-coming comic that was in the Green Room before going on set. And asked him “How did you become so successful?”
And in Jerry’s way, he said, “I just don’t break the chain.”
The young comic says “What chain? What do you mean?”
Jerry says, “Well, my success criteria is that I need to write every day. Whether I’m inspired or not, no matter where in the world I am, I need to write every single day. And that’s my key to success.
And so, whenever I do write, I put an X on my calendar, and then the next day when I write again, I put another X on the calendar, and it makes a chain as these Xs link into each other.
“My goal is just to never break the chain, my chain of writing.”
Jerry seinfeld
In your business, what is your success activity? What’s the one thing that you know that if you were to do it consistently, over time you would achieve what you want to achieve?
Make a chain around it. And when you do that activity, put an X on your calendar.
Even if it’s monthly, daily, weekly, hourly, the frequency doesn’t really matter, but just block the time to do that activity, and commit to it.
Make sure that you protect that time as well.
There could be things that are going to get in the way, so strategize on how you can make sure those things do not get in the way of you executing on your success activity.
And do it at a high energy level of the day for you. If you have lots of energy in the morning, great, do that important thing in the morning. If you’re higher energy level in the afternoon, do it then.
But don’t break the chain.
Ok, so that’s it for this week. Just don’t break your Seinfeld Chain on the important things that you need to do in your business to achieve your success!
